A Man Experiencing Symptoms of Hyperhidrosis in Perth, WA

Is My Sweating Something to Worry About?

There are no set guidelines on what is and isn’t too much sweat. The body needs sweat to regulate our temperatures but, in some cases, the nervous system can become overactive and produce far too much.

So, how can you tell if your sweat levels are excessive? The team at Perth Sweat Clinic have put together this guide to help you find out.

The Symptoms of Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

There is no simple way to measure the amount someone sweats. As such, diagnoses are made on a case-by-case basis. Although every person is different, there are a few tell-tale signs our patients report that allow us to identify cases of hyperhidrosis, including:

  • Frequently changing clothes throughout the day because of underarm sweating
  • Avoiding shaking hands
  • Challenges in romantic relationships and/or work life caused by sweating
  • Choosing not to attend social gatherings because of sweat-based discomfort
  • Difficulty handwriting or typing due to wetness

Many people find that hyperhidrosis has a direct effect on their self-esteem. In fact, over a third of sufferers describe their symptoms as significantly lessening their quality of life. If any of this sounds like you, you may have hyperhidrosis; but you can rest easy knowing it is curable!

If you have a problem with sweat but your symptoms are not as extreme as those above, there are many ways you can manage your sweating. Try switching to natural shampoo, avoiding spicy foods, and opting for open-toed shoes and light, airy clothing whenever possible.

The Types of Hyperhidrosis

Hyperhidrosis is typically most noticeable in the hands, underarms and on the head. When sweating is limited to only these areas, it is called ‘focal hyperhidrosis’ and patients with this problem are otherwise totally healthy.

Palmar hyperhidrosis is excessive sweating of the hands and can be treated with an endoscopic thoracic sympathectomy (ETS) surgery. Craniofacial hyperhidrosis/blushing affects the head and face – this can also be cured with ETS surgery. Lastly, axillary hyperhidrosis is isolated to the armpits and the miraDry procedure targets and eliminates odour glands, sweat glands and underarm hair in that area.

Curing Excessive Sweating

Even though hyperhidrosis has a serious, detrimental effect on its sufferers’ lives, most people never seek treatment because they are not aware of the latest modern treatment options. Effective treatments are available and can bring an end to uncomfortable sweating.
